Ahh, Christmas Time! Just the mention of the holidays brings warm memories to mind—trimming the tree, gathering with family, brightly wrapped gifts, and of course, visits with old Saint Nick. We’re blessed in Columbia to have so many wonderful things to enjoy during the season that it can be difficult to choose. Pop-up farmers markets, holiday craft fairs, countless events, the annual parade, and frequent Santa sightings are only some of the highlights of Christmas in Columbia!
I would be sadly negligent if I failed to mention the Columbia City Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. This beloved performance has been called one of the best around and is well worth the short trip to 1545 Main Street on December 13th. Mark your calendar! Another highly recommended event is the Carolina Carillon Holiday Parade, held on December 6th down Sumter Street toward the Capitol.
And Now, Our Favorite Part of the Season: The Light Displays!
Columbia boasts incredible light shows throughout the city during the holidays. I was given a list of 25, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll share just a few of the standouts.
✨ Lights on the River — Saluda Shoals Park
Running November 26–December 31, this popular attraction features millions of lights and animated displays along a 3-mile drive-thru course. Guests can also enjoy a winter wonder tube slide, hayrides, train rides, and even an impressive laser light show.
Open 6–10 PM daily.
✨ Wild Lights — Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
This holiday extravaganza runs 5–9 PM on select nights from November 21–January 11 (check the zoo’s website for specific dates and pricing).
Stroll through 60+ larger-than-life lantern displays inspired by nature. The event includes nightly snowfall, fun activities, visits from Santa Claus, and more.
To make your night even more magical, you can reserve a private heated igloo complete with hot chocolate, s’mores, and concierge service. Several packages are available, including discounted rates for zoo members.
✨ Fireflies Holiday Lights — Segra Park
Held daily from November 21–January 3, 6–9 PM, this festive event features activities for kids, beautiful light displays, and the “Fireflies Express.”
✨ Santa Saturdays — South Carolina State Museum
A much-loved tradition held only on Saturdays: November 29th, December 6th, 13th, and 20th from 11 AM–3 PM.
Santa hosts a meet-and-greet, the museum presents an immersive Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D experience, and the planetarium offers a breathtaking Northern Lights show featuring the stunning Aurora Borealis. Don’t miss this one!
Residential Light Displays
One of my favorite traditions is loading up the car and cruising around to admire Columbia’s spectacular home displays. There are too many to list, but here are some past favorites that make for an easy driving route:
-
2528 Heyward Street — Synchronized to music; a sign out front lists the station.
-
828 Academy Lane — Another musical display and absolutely worth the stop.
-
1500 State Street — Often called the “Be Merry and Shine Brightly” display.
-
133 Autumn Oaks Lane — A beautifully impressive residential show you won’t want to miss.
With so much happening in Columbia during the holiday season, it’s easy to find something that inspires the Christmas spirit—even in the Grinchiest among us.
🎄 Happy Holidays to All! 🎁
